How to save your seeds for next years garden!

Planning out next years garden may seem like a task you can push off to a later date... but really it's something you should keep in mind when you're harvesting this years crops.

Rather than buying seeds season after season you should be selecting the best crops with the most desirable qualities and then using the seeds from that harvest to grow plants in the future.

To save your seeds for next years garden:

  • pick the best fruits,

  • carefully take out the seeds and dry them,

  • you're going to want to air dry them for about a week,

  • dry the seeds on newspaper rather than paper towel so they don't stick,

  • put the dried seeds into air-tight containers,

  • keep in mind that humidity and warmth will shorten a seeds shelf life,

  • store your seeds in the refrigerator, and

  • when it's time to plant the seeds, take them out of the fridge and let them come to room temperature before opening up the jar of seeds.

Storing seeds is a great way to ensure you have a great harvest year after year. Naturally, some seeds will be duds, it's important to keep your seed jars labelled and take seeds from a few fruits to make sure you'll have some for the next season rather than relying on one fruit alone.
